In Madison Now, Michael Laub and the Cambodian dancer-choreographer Khen Vanthy are collaborating on a new project attempting to merge the timeless elegance of Cambodia’s classical movements with the Madison dance. The latter originated in the U.S. in the sixties, has featured through the years in films, notably Bande à part, and remains a popular dance form in Cambodia, which has a particular take on it. The original contemporary soundtrack is by Cambodia-based British musician/producer Mute Speaker.

Laub, who is noted for his interest in portraiture, will include biographical inserts of various cast members into the choreography. Madison Now‘s cast comprises of professional and independent dancers, teachers, and students from the Secondary School of Fine Arts in Phnom Penh and Phare Ponleu Selpak in Battambang. The project will consist of the results of workshops held in both Phnom Penh and Battambang.

The performance will be shown at The Canadian International School (Koh Pich campus) in Phnom Penh as a work in progress on March 1 and 2, 2024 at 7:30 p.m. under the patronage of the French Institute of Cambodia and Phare Ponleu Selpak.

3 March, END OF LOVE (CABARET)

A cabaret theatre performance based on the works of Angelica Liddell, Joël Pommerat, Pasolini, Hanokh Levin, Larry Tremblay, Sinn Sisamouth & Ros Sereysothea, and directed by KB Saadi. Co-produced with The Acting Academy.

END OF LOVE contemporary cabaret theatre performance at Bar Menaka in Phnom Penh on 3 March

END OF LOVE (CABARET) is the first collaboration between Phare Ponleu Selpak and The Acting Academy Phnom Penh. This performance is directed by one of the builders of The Acting Academy, Karim Belkacem Saadi (thetraceoftime.com).

Created with the work of different international writers (Angelica Liddell, Joël Pommerat, Pasolini, etc.) the performance invites the audience into a whirlpool of dreamscape scenes dealing with “the end of love.”

The project challenges the notion of trans disciplinarity in the Khmer arts by juggling the use of acting, singing, and circus. Each group learning from one another in a reverberation of skills, knowledge, and sensitivities.

END OF LOVE (CABARET) opens the door to modernity in Khmer storytelling and develops the way for “ល្ខោនសម័យ” (Cambodian contemporary theatre). It combines sensibility with the orality of the modern Khmer dialect to deliver a touching-yet-poignant performance through the disposition of a classic cabaret.

At Bar Menaka, the audience will attend an hour-long prologue of the full-length performance, the final version of which will be presented during the 12th edition of the Tini Tinou International Circus Festival in Battambang in June 2024.
