Earlier this month, on 4 August 2023, was the commemoration of two years since the passing of Lokru Srey Bandaul, one of the beloved teachers and co-founders of Phare Ponleu Selpak. We remember the great meaning, purpose, and vision he gave to the Phare Ponleu Selpak community and the rest of the city of Battambang, Cambodia
Below are two podcast episodes from 2022 and 2023 recorded by LAM Lay, a close friend of Srey Bandaul which talk about Lokru’s hopes and memories.

ជម្រាបសួរលោកគ្រូម្ដងទៀត កាលពីឆ្នាំមុនយើងបានជជែកគ្នាម្ដងហើយអំពី “ទស្សនវិជ្ជាជីវិត និងកេរដំណែលរបស់លោកគ្រូ” ដែលបានបន្សល់ទុកជូនមនុស្សជំនាន់ក្រោយ។ មួយឆ្នាំកន្លងទៅនេះ យើងហាក់ដូចជាឃ្លាតឆ្ងាយគ្នាសម្បើមណាស់។ ឆ្លងកាត់រយៈពេលមួយឆ្នាំកន្លងទៅនេះ លោកគ្រូដឹងទេថា មានរឿងរ៉ាវអ្វីខ្លះបានកើតឡើង ត្រឹមតែមួយស្របក់ភ្នែក ព្រិចបើកៗ អ្វីៗក៏បានហោះហើរតាមកាលកំណត់របស់វា ប្រៀបបានដូចជាការគ្រោងទុកអ៊ីចឹងដែរ។ ក្នុងកិច្ចសន្ទនាលើកទី២ដោយព្រលឹងជាមួយលោកគ្រូនេះ គឺជាការសន្ទនាដោយស្នាមញញឹម ដោយក្ដីនឹករឭក ការដឹងគុណ និងមនោសញ្ចេតនាដ៏ស៊ីជម្រៅមួយរបស់ខ្ញុំ និងមនុស្សម្នាឯទៀត ដែលធ្លាប់បានស្គាល់លោកគ្រូដែរ។ ខ្ញុំ គឺជានាំសារមួយដ៏សុក្រឹតម្នាក់ជូនលោកគ្រូ ពីឋានកណ្ដាលនេះទៅ។
Hello again, dear teacher. Last year, we discussed the “Philosophy of Life and Your Legacy” that has been kept for the next generation. We seemed to be miles away this past year. Do you know what has happened over the course of this one year, teacher? In the blink of an eye, everything went exactly as seemed it has been planned. In this second meaningful talk with you in spirit, is a discussion with a smile, remembrance, gratitude, and a deep emotion carried by me as well as others whom know you. From this earth, I am transferring an accurate message to you.
ខ្ញុំខ្លួនឯង សម្រាកក្នុងភពផែនដីនេះ ហាក់ដូចជាសប្បាយរីករាយម្យ៉ាងដែរ ប៉ុន្តែខ្ញុំពុំដឹងទាល់តែសោះថា សុខទុក្ខលោកគ្រូបែបណាដែរ នៅឯឋានលើនោះ។ តែមិនថ្វីឡើយ ខ្ញុំជឿជាក់ចិត្តថា “បុរសសម្ដីផ្អែមដូចលោកគ្រូនេះ ទៅណាក៏ដោយ ក៏មានគេស្រឡាញ់រាប់អាន អាណិតអាសូរ ចង់រាប់រកជាគ្នាដែរ”។ ពេលមួយដែលខ្ញុំជជែកគ្នា ជាមួយលោកគ្រូ គឺលោកគ្រូបានញញឹមដូចជាដឹងថា “ថាមពលនៃស្នាមញញឹមរបស់លោកគ្រូ ហាក់ដូចជាថ្នាំបន្សាបក្ដីកង្វល់របស់ខ្ញុំដែលមានទាំងអម្បាលម៉ាន”។ ស្នាមញញឹមបែបលោកគ្រូនេះ គឺជា “ស្នាមញញឹមដែលហៅថា ស្នាមញញឹមក្នុងនាមជាអ្នកផ្ដល់ឱ្យ”។ សំណួរសួរថា ដូចម្ដេចដែលហៅថា ស្នាមញញឹមក្នុងនាមជាអ្នកផ្ដល់ឱ្យ? លោកគ្រូ បានប្រាប់ខ្ញុំថា “អ្នកផ្ដល់ឱ្យ” ងាយស្រួលយល់ទេ “គឺជាអ្នកឱ្យ ដែលមិនរំពឹងការត្រលប់មកវិញឡើយ”។ គិតសម្ដីលោកគ្រូសព្វៗទៅ “ការផ្ដល់ឱ្យនេះ គឺមិនមែនទាល់តែយើងមានទ្រព្យរាប់គំនរ មានលុយចាយមិនអស់នោះឡើយ នោះគ្រាន់តែផ្ដល់ឱ្យស្នាមញញឹមយ៉ាងសាមញ្ញ ទឹកចិត្តដែលមានទង្វើឬកិរិយាដែលមិនបំផ្លាញនរណាម្នាក់ ទោះតិចតួច ស្ដួចស្ដើងប៉ុនណា ក៏ហៅថាអ្នកផ្ដល់ឱ្យដោយសុទ្ធចិត្តដែរ”។
I find myself seemingly pleased when resting on this earth, but I have no clue how happy you are up there. I am convinced, though, “that sweet-spoken men like you, no matter where you go, are loved, sympathetic, and others would get along with you easily.” When I was talking to you, you grinned as though knowing, “The power of your smile is like an antidote to my worries.” This teacher-like smile is referred to as ‘a smile as a giver.’ The question is, what is a smile as a giver? You explained that “the giver” is simply to understand, “the giver who does not expect a return. Considering your word, giving is not just when you have so much, it is also just simple as offering a grin, a meaningful smile, or an act or manner that does not even slightly harm anyone. You contribute totally no matter what you name it.”

បើនិយាយអំពីការផ្ដល់ឱ្យរបស់លោកគ្រូទៅកាន់កូនសិស្សលោកគ្រូ និងមនុស្សជំនាន់ក្រោយវិញ ខ្ញុំជឿជាក់យ៉ាងប្រាកដថា គឺជាស្នាមញញឹមដែលមិនជំពាក់គ្នា ហើយឱ្យដោយមនោសញ្ចេតនាដ៏ជ្រាលជ្រៅមួយ។ បែបនេះ ហើយលោកគ្រូ ទើបមនុស្សម្នាតែងតែនឹកដល់លោកគ្រូ នឹកស្នាមញញឹម ជាអ្នកផ្ដល់ឱ្យរបស់លោកគ្រូ និងកាយវិការដ៏ទន់ភ្លន់បង្កប់ចេតនាដ៏ល្អប្រពៃ។
When it comes to giving to the students and the next generation, I truly believe that it is a smile that does not belong to each other and is given with deep emotion. This is how people always miss you: the smile, the giver of you, and the gentle gestures that embody good intentions.
ការផ្ដល់ឱ្យរបស់លោកគ្រូ ប្រសិនខ្ញុំជាលោកគ្រូ ក៏ចាកចេញទៅដោយស្នាមញញឹម និងមិនខកបំណងឡើយ។ កូនសិស្សដែលឆ្លងកាត់ការបំពាក់បំប៉ន ទាំងជំនាញផ្នែកសិល្បៈ ទាំងជំនាញជីវិត ពេលនេះពួកគាត់មានអនាគតល្អ និងមានជីវិតស្រស់បំព្រងណាស់។ ម្ដងណាក៏ដោយ ឱ្យតែនិយាយអំពី “បុរសម្នាក់ដែលមានឈ្មោះថា ស្រី បណ្ដូល ម្ដងនោះ គឺតែមានការចងចាំ និងក្ដីសង្ឃឹម។
With what you have done, if I were you, I would also leave with a smile and not be disappointed. Students who have been trained in both art and life skills now have a bright future and a beautiful life. Every time, when talking about “a man named Srey Bandaul, there is always memory and hope.

លោកគ្រូដឹងទេថា ដោយសារក្ដីសង្ឃឹមជាប់ជាដរាប ទើបគ្រួសារនៃសមាគមហ្វារពន្លឺសិល្បៈ ពួតដៃពួតជើងគ្នាមិនឈប់ឈររហូតជម្នះបាននូវ “ការបិទទ្វារនៃក្ដីសង្ឃឹម ព្រោះតែខ្វះខាតមូលនិធំបន្ត” និងទទួលបានកេរ្តិ៍ឈ្មោះ យ៉ាងសុះសាយទូទៅពិភពលោក។ ថ្មីៗនេះ ក្ដីសង្ឃឹមមួយដែលអាចបំភ្លេចបាននោះគឺ “កំណត់ត្រាពិភពលោក នៃការសម្ដែងដែលមានរយៈពេលវែងជាងគេ” ដែលមិនធ្លាប់មានជាប្រវត្តិសាស្រ្តនៃប្រទេសកម្ពុជា និងសាកលលោកផងដែរ។ សកម្មភាពសិល្បៈនៃខេត្តបាត់ដំបង កម្រើកឡើងដូចគេដាស់ មិនដូចពីពេលមុនឡើយ។ ស្រមោលអន្នកាលនៃជម្ងឺកូវីដ-១៩ ដែលបានឆក់យកលោកគ្រូចេញពីពួកយើង ក៏ត្រូវបានសាបរលាបដោយសារ “ក្ដីសង្ឃឹម” ដែលលោកគ្រូបានបន្សល់ទុកជូនពួកយើងដែរ។
You know that because of the lasting hope, the family of the Phare Ponleu Selpak worked tirelessly until they tackled over the “Closure of Hope Due to Lack of Funding” and gained a well-known reputation worldwide. Recently, one of the most memorable hopes was the recognition of the Guinness World Record for the Longest Circus Show ever in the history of Cambodia and the world. The artistic activities of Battambang Province are on the rise like never before. The shadow of COVID-19’s demise that took you away from us was also overshadowed by the “hope” that you left for us.
លោកគ្រូ! ខ្ញុំជជែកតែឯងនេះ ដូចជាមិនទំនងសោះ ខ្ញុំមានមួយសំណួរដែលចង់ចោទសួរលោកចេញពីភពផែនដីនេះ ក្នុងនាមជាអ្នកអប់រំម្នាក់។ ប្រសិនជាលោកគ្រូជាអប់រំម្នាក់ តើគួរតែអប់រំមនុស្សទៅលើចំណុចអ្វីខ្លះ? លោកគ្រូ បណ្ដូលឆ្លើយ “ជាទូទៅ ផ្ទាល់ខ្លួនខ្ញុំ ក្នុងន័យអ្នកអប់រំ គឺត្រូវអប់រំ៣ គឺ ចិត្ត បញ្ញា និងបច្ចេកទេស ពីព្រោះមិនអាចខ្វះមួយណាបានទេ”។ អរគុណច្រើនលោកគ្រូ ចំពោះចម្លើយមួយៗច្បាស់ៗ។ ក្រៅតែពីចម្លើយនេះ តើលោកគ្រូមានអ្វីចង់បន្ថែមពីលើនេះដែរឬទេ? លោកគ្រូបណ្ដូលឆ្លើយ “អ្នកឯងគិតតែពីលុយៗ អ្នកលះបង់សង្គមអ្នកចោល លះបង់មិត្តចោល មិនខ្វល់ពីវប្បធម៌ មិនខ្វល់បីបរិស្ថាន ថ្ងៃក្រោយទៅវាគ្មានអ្វីជោគជ័យឡើយ។ បើជោគជ័យ គឺវាគ្រាន់តែជាការច្រឡំប៉ុណ្ណោះ”។ អរគុណលោកគ្រូម្ដងទៀត ចំពោះចម្លើយច្បាស់ៗ ហើយមានអត្ថន័យខ្លឹមសារខ្លាំងមែនទែន ដ្បិតថាអ្វីដែលលោកគ្រូបានឆ្លើយនេះ គឺជាការឆ្លុះបញ្ចាំងមួយ ទៅកាន់ការរស់នៅរបស់យើង ប្រៀបបានដូចជាអ្នកខ្លះ ប្រឹងបំផ្លាញគេឯង បំផ្លាញធម្មជាតិ បំផ្លាញវប្បធម៌ ដើម្បីតែឆ្នាំងបាយ ឬក៏ផលប្រយោជន៍របស់ខ្លួនតែប៉ុណ្ណោះ”។
Lokru (Teacher), am I talking alone?, it seems unlikely. I have a question to ask you from this planet in the name of an educator. If you are an educator, what will you educate people? The teacher replied, “Personally, in the sense of educators, there are three things to educate: Mind, Intelligence, and Skills, because there is no shortage of any.” Thank you very much, teacher, for the clear answer. Apart from this answer, do you have anything to add? “If you only think about money, you’ll abandon your society, you’ll give up friends, you won’t care about culture, you won’t care about the environment, and the next day there will be no success, if success is just a mistake,” he said. Again, thank you for the clear and very meaningful answer because what you answered is a reflection of our lives, as if some people are trying to destroy others, destroy nature, destroy culture, for only the pot of money or its interests.

សំឡេងកូនស្រី៖ “ចាប់តំាងពីប៉ាស្លាប់ទៅ! ខ្ញុំចេះធ្វើការច្រើន ហើយជួយម៉ាក់ក៏បានច្រើនជាងមុនដែរ។ ជាពិសេសនោះ គឺពេលនេះ ខ្ញុំក៏បានស្ម័គ្រចិត្តនៅហ្វារដែរ។ និយាយទៅ ការធ្វើការនៅហ្វារនេះ ក៏អរគុណទៅប៉ាដែរ ព្រោះអី ធ្លាប់ជាប់មាត់ជាមួយប៉ាថា ពេលយើងធំដឹងក្ដី ចេះគិតគូរ គឺនឹងធ្វើការនៅហ្វារ”។
“I’ve been able to do a lot of work and help my Mom more since Dad passed away, especially now that I’ve volunteered at Phare Ponleu Selpak. By working here, I also want to thank Dad, because I told him that when I grow up, I will work in Phare Ponleu Selpak.”
លោកគ្រូសាយទាយថា តើសំឡេងនេះ គឺជាសំឡេងរបស់អ្នកណា? សំឡេងនេះ គឺជាសំឡេងកូនស្រីច្បងរបស់លោកគ្រូ ដែលជាអនាគតនៃអ្នកបន្តវេន និងអ្នកមើលថែរគ្រួសារជំនួសលោកគ្រូនានាពេលអនាគត។ ខ្ញុំបានមើលឃើញទេពកោសល្យសិល្បៈរបស់កូនស្រីលោកគ្រូនេះ មិនចាញ់លោកគ្រូប៉ុន្មានដែរ។ អាចនិយាយបានថា ប្អូនស្រី គឺជាក្ដីសង្ឃឹមដ៏អណ្ដែតត្រចង់មួយ ឬជាគ្រាប់ពេជ្រមួយគ្រាប់ ចែងចាំងនាពេលអនាគតបន្ទាប់ពីលោកគ្រូហើយ។
Guess whose voice this is, teacher? This voice is your eldest daughter’s voice, the future successor and the one who will be taking care of the family instead of you in the future. I have seen that the artistic talent of your daughter is not much inferior to you. It can be said that the she is a bright hope or a diamond shining in the future after you.
មនុស្ស គឺជាក្ដីសង្ឃឹម។ មានក្ដីសង្ឃឹម គឺនឹងមានស្នាមញញឹម។ មានស្នាមញញឹម គឺនឹងមានភាពរីករាយក្នុងជីវិត។
បងប្អូនដែលបានស្ដាប់សារសំឡេងនេះ ខ្ញុំជឿជាក់ថា នឹងមានស្នាមញញឹមជាមួយខ្ញុំ ក៏ដូចជា ជាមួយលោកគ្រូដែរ។ មនុស្សយើងបាត់អ្វីក៏បាត់ចុះតែកុំបាត់ក្ដីសង្ឃឹម និងស្នាមញញឹម។ ដើម្បីបន្តស្នាមញញឹម និងក្ដីសង្ឃឹមដែលលោកគ្រូ ស្រី បណ្ដូល បានបន្សល់ទុក បងប្អូនអាចចូលរួមចំណែកជាមួយខ្ញុំបាន។ តើចូលរួមចំណែកដោយរបៀបណា? ទី១ សមាគម ហ្វារពន្លឺសិល្បៈ និងសហគ្រាសហ្វារ មានការសម្ដែងជាប្រចាំថ្ងៃ បងប្អូនគ្រាន់តែទិញសំបុត្រទស្សនា ក៏ជាផ្នែកមួយនៅក្នុងការគាំទ្រ និងលើកទឹកចិត្តសមាគមនេះ ក្នុងការបន្តដំណើរទៅមុខទៀត ជាមួយនឹងស្នាមញញឹម និងក្ដីសង្ឃឹមផងដែរ។ ទី២ លោកគ្រូ ស្រី បណ្ដូល ផ្ទាល់ មាន មូលនិធិមួយដែលយើងហៅថា “មូលនិធិស្រីបណ្ដូល”។ ចំពោះបងប្អូនដែលស្ដាប់សារសំឡេងនេះ បងប្អូនក៏អាចរួមចំណែកផ្សព្វផ្សាយក្ដីសង្ឃឹមរបស់លោកគ្រូ ស្រីបណ្ដូលតាមរយៈ ការចែករំលែកកិច្ចសន្ទនានេះទៅកាន់ប្អូនបងប្អូនដទៃដែរ។
Human beings are the hope. When there is hope, there will be a smile. When there is a smile, there will be happiness in life.
