Year after year, Battambang hosts a diverse lineup of events to welcome visitors. Major celebrations like the Battambang Water Festival and Lantern Floating—which features thrilling district boat races and vibrant night festivities along the Sangker River illuminated by floating lanterns—showcase the town's rich heritage. Sangkran Battambang celebrates Khmer New Year in the province, transforming the city with colorful decorations, glowing night displays along the river, live art performances, and energetic water activities during the main festival days that make the streets loud, crowded, and enjoyable. Welcoming the green season, the Battambang Fruit Festival gathers local farmers to showcase fresh produce—especially famous regional durians from across the districts—accompanied by lively circus acts, music, and colorful performance parades in the city, each performance featuring artists from Phare Ponleu Selpak.
Every year, Phare Ponleu Selpak artists bring these civic traditions to life while also organizing their own unique events, such as the S'Art Urban Art Festival and the world-renowned Tini Tinou International Circus Festival. Battambang’s Cultural Rebirth: From Khmer Rouge Silence to UNESCO Creative City
It is almost unbelievable—just a few decades ago, the sound of Cambodian art fell completely silent across Battambang and throughout the country, replaced only by the painful cries and exhaustion of the Khmer people under the Khmer Rouge Genocide regime. Today, that heavy silence along the Sangker River and the streets of Battambang has yielded to vibrant life, renewed energy, and the widespread joy of its people. The voice of the arts echoes once more through bold contemporary murals on historic walls and creative urban revitalization, allowing Battambang to proudly carry its new title: UNESCO’s Creative City of Crafts and Folk Art. The transformation is nothing short of miraculous.
