This year, Phare Ponleu Selpak has taken a meaningful step toward creating new opportunities for young female dancers. In February, thanks to funding from the International Organization of La Francophonie (OIF) we launched a new project aimed at improving the learning environment for our dancers. This project aims not only opening doors to new professional opportunities for female dancers but also includes essential workshops on nutrition and menstrual health.

Promoting the professional integration of Cambodian women in the dance industry

A major part of the project is centered around increasing opportunities for young women in the Cambodian dance industry, where there has historically been a gap in professional prospects between men and women. With the introduction of weekend dance classes thanks to the funding from OIF, we’ve seen enrollment grow from 41 young women to 110. These classes include not only classical and traditional Khmer dance but also contemporary styles, giving students new skills to develop and enhance their career opportunities.

Creating a conducive learning environment

Enhancing the professional development of students goes hand in hand with upgrading learning facilities. The current studio, with its outdated floor, heat issues, flood risks, and noise disturbances, has been challenging for our students. By renovating the dance studio, Phare aspires to offer a more suitable and professional learning environment for the students. With the upgraded facilities, students will have access to a professional and supportive setting, allowing them to improve their skills and broaden their professional horizons.

Nutrition, a major issue in Cambodia

This funding also allowed the relaunch of awareness workshops, one of which focuses on nutrition. Over the course of 9 sessions, students of all ages learn about the significance of a balanced diet for maintaining good health and enhancing performance. These workshops cover essential topics such as nutrients, their functions, and how diet influences concentration and overall well-being, providing valuable insights to help students make healthier choices.

Raising awareness about menstrual health

Another crucial aspect of this project is menstrual health education. We held nine workshops tailored to the specific needs of women: boys were informed about the challenges women face to foster understanding and support, while girls were given advice on menstrual hygiene and health. These sessions aim to break taboos and promote a better understanding of women’s health.

We extend our gratitude to the OIF for their crucial support. Their vital support not only improves our students’ learning experiences but also equips young women with essential skills for entering the workforce. Looking ahead, we’re excited about the upcoming renovation of the dance studio in December 2024, which will be a significant step forward for dance education at Phare Ponleu Selpak.
