This week, we’re thrilled to feature Clémence Deville from France. With her passion for the arts and a keen eye for storytelling, Clémence immersed herself in life at Phare as a communications volunteer. From writing and photography to organizing creative projects, she embraced every opportunity with enthusiasm. Let’s dive into her inspiring journey!
My name is Clémence Deville. I’m 21 years old, French, and currently studying Political Science at Sciences Po Toulouse. I’m in the third year of my degree, which includes a year abroad. For this year, I chose mixed mobility: one semester as an internship and another in university. Starting February, I’ll be heading to Athens, Greece, for a semester on Erasmus!
I’m passionate about the arts—cinema, theater, music, and visual storytelling. I’ve spent years doing theater and playing piano. I also love capturing moments through photography and video as well.
What drew you to Phare Ponleu Selpak?
I’ve always wanted to work in the cultural sector, though I’m still exploring which path to take. Phare Ponleu Selpak is the perfect place to merge my interests in arts, culture, and communication while contributing to meaningful work.
During my time at Phare, I had the privilege of writing articles, creating content for social media, and documenting life on campus. Capturing moments of joy, creativity, and community through photography and videography quickly became my favorite part of the role!
What were your main responsibilities as a communications volunteer?
My responsibilities were diverse and engaging. I wrote articles highlighting life at Phare, traditional festivals, and even conducted interviews with inspiring figures such as Véronique Decrop, the French founder of this organization.
I also created content for YouTube and social media, including Instagram Stories, while documenting events through photography and videography to capture the vibrancy of Phare’s activities.
Additionally, I assisted with campus tours for French-speaking visitors and contributed to improving volunteer experiences by developing feedback questionnaires.
Even though my internship in Battambang has ended, my commitment hasn’t. I still have articles to finish and videos to edit, and I’m happy to stay connected and contribute from afar!
What were some of your best experiences at Phare?
There were so many unforgettable moments during my time at Phare, and I just have to share a few with you! One of the highlights was joining the mobile library and meeting children from the surrounding neighborhoods. It gave me such a deep appreciation for Phare’s mission of bringing culture and education to everyone, no matter where they come from. I was also lucky enough to witness some truly breathtaking performances—like the fire-juggling and apsara dances—that left me absolutely in awe.
Then there was Pchum Ben Days! I was so happy to join the school and take part in a Buddhist ceremony, which was such a meaningful experience for me.
And of course, one of the happiest moments was celebrating Phare’s 30th anniversary with the entire team at the electrifying rock and circus concert featuring VanThan and VannDa—it was pure joy, and I couldn’t stop smiling!

What did you learn from your experience?
Phare taught me so much—about Cambodia, its culture, and its people. I learned to appreciate traditional dances, music, instruments, and even snacks like fish amok, sticky rice, and Cambodian donuts!
Most importantly, I learned the power of a smile. In Cambodia, smiles are everywhere, and they taught me to see the bright side in every situation and to cherish each moment.
From a professional perspective, I developed my creativity, proactivity, and communication skills. Working on the communications team encouraged me to think outside the box, share ideas, and bring them to life.
What will you bring with you from Phare?
Phare is more than a school, it’s a testament to the indispensability of art, memory, and heritage. Being at Phare allowed me to meet incredible people, hear their stories, and witness the transformative power of art.
I’ve come to understand the importance of preserving and celebrating cultural memory. It’s a responsibility that I’ll carry with me as I continue to explore the world of arts and culture.
