- Van Chhovorn is a wood sculptor and painter who was born in a Thai refugee camp and had a challenging early life. Due to financial situations in the family, he was compelled to drop out of school to work and support the family. In early 2000, he fell victim of enslavement on a fishing vessel in Thailand, and each day he kept faith and each night he found peace in painting Buddha on his sleeping mat. After escaping from the fishing vessel, Chhovorn returned home and attended art training at Phare Ponleu Selpak. Since his graduation in 2012, he has produced many art pieces which mainly explore modern-day slavery, gender roles, disabilities, social issues, the environment, love, and cruelty – all from a very personal perspective, inspired by the hardship of his own life after he escaped from slavery in Thailand.
