Every year on April 15, artists and art enthusiasts worldwide celebrate World Art Day, an international day of creativity, culture, and artistic expression. This special day reminds us of how art enriches lives, fosters communication, and inspires social change.
At Phare Ponleu Selpak, where art is at the heart of our mission, we take great pride in nurturing young Cambodian talent and using art as a force for transformation.

The Power of Art at Phare Ponleu Selpak
For over three decades, Phare Ponleu Selpak has been a pillar of artistic education in Battambang, Cambodia, nurturing creativity and transforming lives through the arts. We offer two main art programs that empower young people to express themselves, enjoy the arts for fun, develop professional skills, and contribute to their communities:
- Visual and Applied Arts School: Fine arts, graphic design, and animation
- Performing Arts School: Music, circus, dance, and theatre
Beyond the arts, we provide formal education, social support, and community outreach, ensuring a holistic approach to nurturing creativity and opportunity. Through these programs, students gain not only artistic expertise but also confidence and opportunities for a brighter future.
Art is more than just a subject at Phare Ponleu Selpak; it is a lifeline. Many of our students and teachers came from challenging backgrounds, finding healing and hope through creative expression. NEM Chanthoeurn, a circus teacher and former student at the Performing Arts School, reflects on how his education shaped his life:

“I came from a poor background, selling food on the streets, but art gave me education, a stable career, and opportunities. The circus transformed my life, allowing me to learn, grow, and perform on international stages.”

Spotlight on Phare Artists and Alumni
Art at Phare is about more than learning techniques—it’s about telling stories and preserving Cambodia’s cultural identity.
One inspiring example is MIL Kosal, who grew up in the Cambodian countryside and, through dedication and Phare’s support, became a senior animator at Phare Creative Studio. His journey is a testament to the life-changing power of the arts.
“Art is the most beautiful way to express human life,” said KHCHAO Touch, a Visual and Applied Arts alumnus. “Without art, life would feel empty. It’s also a powerful tool for sharing messages and connecting people across nations.”
From painters and graphic designers to circus performers, Phare’s artists continue to push creative boundaries while keeping Cambodia’s culture alive.

Art as a Tool for Social Change
Beyond creativity, art has the power to address social issues, mental health, and education. At Phare Ponleu Selpak, we use art to spark discussions, challenge perspectives, and drive change.
Through murals, digital storytelling, and live performances, we explore topics such as environmental awareness, gender equality, and historical narratives, ensuring that art remains a voice for the voiceless.
“The future of art will not only enrich you but also positively impact your community and country,” said LON Loa, co-founder of Phare Ponleu Selpak and a drawing teacher at Visual and Applied Arts School. “Art teaches creativity, independence, time management, and valuable life lessons that shape your character.”
