Pride of Cambodia: Phare circus artists perform at the Intercontinental Hotel San Francisco

On September 30th, Phare Ponleu Selpak artists had the honor to perform at the Ignite Event in San Francisco, hosted by our partner Give2Asia.
“Amazing performance”, “vibrant”, “impressive” and “incredible” were some of the comments we heard after our show.
Phare’s friend Professor Muhammad Yunus was the key speaker of the
staff students partner give2asiaevent, and was granted an award for his lifetime achievement. He emphasized the quality of our show and spoke about the need for such innovative social businesses to rebuild Cambodia both culturally and economically.

So, what lies behind the unbelievable stories of our international circus performers? Hard work, courage, and our organization: Phare Ponleu Selpak (“The Brightness of the Arts”).

Today Phare Ponleu Selpak is Cambodia’s leading art school in both visual and performing arts. In addition, Phare Ponleu Selpak comprehensively addresses child education and development through formal schooling and social support services.

Created 20 years ago, Phare Ponleu Selpak currently works with 996
staff student give2asiastudents, empowering them to overcome their disadvantaged backgrounds. The most committed students continue their studies with state of the art professional courses in order to hone their craft to perfection. The graduates of our circus school can pursue well-paid job opportunities with our social business Phare, The Cambodian Circus.

Circus artist Ngai Sokheng says, “Phare has given me the opportunity to change the life conditions of myself and my family; I wouldn’t have any other opportunity to earn such a good living so fast with another job. Then secondly it’s opened my mind a lot because it’s given me so many opportunities to travel and have a completely new view on the world and on how to live life.”

The growing success of Phare artists in Asia, Europe and now America demonstrates the power of the arts for child development and social change.
